Milwaukee, Oct. 31, 2017 – Thanks to 20 years of generosity and dedication from WBCS – formerly known as Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse. Inc. – the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) is now in a better position than ever to advance cancer research. The board of directors of this all-volunteer organization recently announced its commitment to fund a $1 million Prostate Cancer Research Professorship at MCW, in addition to its already active breast cancer professorship.
Once funding for the new prostate cancer professorship is complete, two outstanding researchers will represent the mission of WBCS by working to combat both diseases. With the establishment of the Breast Cancer Research Professorship in 2014, WBCS helped MCW recruit nationally renowned researcher and physician Hallgeir Rui, MD, PhD, whose leadership has transformed the Breast Cancer Research Center of Excellence.
In 1998, when Nancé Kinney founded WBCS in response to her own cancer diagnosis, the organization donated $42,000 to breast cancer research at MCW. The next year, WBCS added prostate cancer as an additional focus. To date, with its 2017 gift, WBCS has donated $6.475 million. Today, thousands of local WBCS volunteers and donors have empowered MCW to take advantage of many research opportunities and secure $61.5 million in grants from the National Cancer Institute and other large funders.
